Landlords and students criticised for poor state of homes

Both private landlords and their student tenants have come under fire from residents in Worcester.

Worcester City Council have been urged by non-student residents to hurry up the introduction of tougher planning guidelines for student accommodation in the city after labelling the area a ‘ghetto’.

City planning chiefs have backed tougher planning restrictions governing the conversion of homes into houses of multiple occupancy (HMOs) earlier this month and have begun a public consultation on the issue.

Landlords have been labelled ‘greedy’ in their quest to convert more and more houses while the students have been called ‘anti social’.

Councillor Richard Udall spoke of the residents’ worries about the effects on the community: “Very soon the area would become an unplanned bedsit village. We cannot afford to allow that to happen.”
